The famous Lotus 72 is a Team Lotus F1 machine designed by Colin Chapman and Maurice Philippe. It debuted at the 1970 Spanish GP and won a total of 20 races and three constructors' championships. The Ford Cosworth DFV 3-liter V8 engine is mounted vertically in the mid-aluminum monocoque chassis. The car was innovatively designed with an aerodynamically advantageous wedge-shaped body shape that placed the radiator inside the left and right sidepods, instead of the front-mounted radiator that had been common until then, as well as the adoption of torsion bars for the suspension and inboard brakes. From the 1973 Spanish GP, the updated 72E was introduced to comply with the change in regulations. Ronnie Peterson, who joined Lotus that year, won four races, while Emerson Fittipaldi, who had been crowned the youngest world champion the previous year, won three races. Although Team Lotus missed out on the Drivers' title, they won the Constructors' Championship in 1973.
